COMPAY SEGUNDO - LIVE IN THEATRES
142- COMPAY SEGUNDO war ein kubanischer Musiker der 1907 in Siboney bei Santiago de Cuba geboren wurde. Segundo lernte schon in jungen Jahren Gitarre, Bongos und Klarinette spielen.1934 wurde er von Ñico Saquito in seine Band aufgenommen.
1948 gründete er zusammen mit Lorenzo Hierrezuelo das erfolgreiche Duo Los Compadres. Dort sang er die zweite Stimme, was dann zu seinem Künstlernamen COMPAY SEGUNDO einbrachte. Nach 7 Jahren trennte sich das Duo allerdings im Streit und COMPAY machte nicht weiter Musik, sondern verdiente sein Geld in einer Zigarrenfabrik.
1970 begann er dann wieder zu musizieren und 1989 reiste er in die USA, um sein neues Lied CHAN CHAN vorzustellen. Dort wurde eine Plattenfirma auf ihn aufmerksam und nahm ihn unter Vertrag.
Seinen größten Erfolg und den großen Durchbruch erreichte er mit 90 Jahren, als er bei Ry Cooder bei der Aufnahme der CD Buena Vista Social Club mitwirkte.
